False Entrance
Blue-water swim-throughs at the lip of a 30 m drop

False Entrance is a break in the Osprey Reef rim where the reef edge drops to a wall at around 30 m and bommies stand off the lip, cut with blue-water swim-throughs. Gorgonian fans, whips and soft corals cover the structure, resident barracuda and big-eye trevally school over it, and hammerheads cruise past out in the blue.

The dive
The dive runs along the reef edge, which drops to a wall at a depth of around 30 m. Bommies stand off the lip and the gaps between them make blue-water swim-throughs, opening onto nothing but ocean on the far side. Colourful gorgonian fans, whips and soft corals cover the faces, and visibility here is normally excellent, so the drop over the edge of the reef into the abyss reads clearly from well back.
Fish action is the reason to be here. Resident barracuda hold over the structure and big-eye trevally school alongside them, while hammerheads cruise out in the blue, so the pattern is to work the bommies and keep checking the open water between passes. In strong current this becomes a great drift dive instead, and you let the flow carry you along the edge rather than fight it.

Season follows Osprey Reef: Coral Sea crossings run in the calmer dry season; cyclone risk and rough seas suspend trips Jan–Feb, with hammerhead numbers building Sep–Dec.
Know before you go
- The reef edge drops straight into open water: line up a swim-through before you enter it so you come out over structure rather than out over the abyss.
- Current here can run hard enough to turn the dive into a drift, so take the call on the day and be ready to go with the flow along the edge instead of holding one spot.

Questions divers ask
How deep is False Entrance?+
The reef edge drops to a wall at a depth of around 30 m, and that lip is where the dive is worked. The wall continues into open ocean below it, but the bommies, the swim-throughs and the fish schools all sit at or above the 30 m mark.
