Sado Island

Resident kobudai wrasse swim up to greet divers at Aka-Iwa

Sado lies in the Sea of Japan off Niigata, where warm and cold currents meet and feed a wide spread of dive sites around the island. Boats run out of small harbours such as Kita-Koura to sites only minutes away. Aka-Iwa is the signature dive, with resident kobudai, the giant Asian sheepshead wrasse, swimming up to meet divers, while Kotoura is known for its underwater topography. Summer and autumn bring water far clearer than the snow-country image of Niigata suggests.

About diving in Sado Island

Diving on Sado is a short-hop boat affair: most sites lie 3 to 15 minutes from the harbour. Kita-Koura, where the boats work Aka-Iwa, Nagate and an artificial reef, is one of the standard areas. Another is Kotoura, where a dive clubhouse sits on an inlet a minute's walk from the boat that runs to the sites. Dive spots are spread right around the island, and guides pick the day's sites to suit the state of the sea.

The meeting of warm and cold currents gives the island good visibility and a rich mix of life. Aka-Iwa holds nudibranchs for macro photographers, schools of pelagic fish and giant Pacific octopuses, and one of its kobudai goes by the name Kojiro. Elsewhere on the Kita-Koura boat sites, divers have logged a kinubari pair in breeding colours, schooling isaki, juvenile cleaner wrasse and a charging hiramasa.

Sado suits divers who want temperate-water diving without long transits, and photographers who want both nudibranchs and big wrasse at one site. On land, the Sado Gold Mine, developed during the Edo period, and the Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center give non-diving companions a reason to make the ferry crossing.
