Devil's Claw
Three crevices and a lone coral head shaped like a claw

Devil's Claw is a wall offshore of Longbay, fifteen minutes by boat from the Riding Rock marina. Three crevices and a free-standing coral head form the shape of a claw, the wall drops in two steps to 46 m (150 ft), and sharks are seen out over both deep plateaus.

The dive
The boat moors in 14 m (45 ft) over hard pan with small sand grooves and scattered coral heads. The claw is a triple crevice formation with a free-standing coral head offshore of the wall: from above, the three cuts look like the fingers of a claw and the coral head like the heel of the paw. The wall drops twice, from 14 to 24 m (45 to 80 ft), then from about 30 to 46 m (100 to 150 ft), where it slopes out to the deep cliff.
The route crosses the reef to the crevices and, after exploring them, heads right (northeast) along the outer wall for about 30 m (100 ft) to more coral caves. It returns past the claw, descends southwest along the wall to a large coral outcrop about 45 m (150 ft) away, and comes back along the wall top to the boat. Sharks and other big animals are seen out over both deep plateaus.
Corals grow thickly around the crevices, big elephant ear sponges fill the deeper area, and two small pillar coral colonies mark the ends of the crevices. Quillfin blennies have been seen many times at the bottom of the site, and there is usually a good variety of fish. It is usually run as the first or afternoon dive.
