Kariwak Reef
A sheltered shore reef off Store Bay used for training and night dives
Kariwak Reef lies south-west of Store Bay, the main beachfront at Crown Point, close enough to shore to be dived from the beach. It is a shallow, sloping reef sheltered by the bay, with very mild current or none at all, and is a favourite for training dives, night dives and new divers.
Also known as Kariwak.
Where it is and how deep
11.1530° N, 60.8368° WApproximate position — the dashed circle shows where the site lies; your operator's briefing has the mooring.
The dive
The reef slopes gently away from the shore, starting at about 3 m (10 ft) and reaching about 15 m (50 ft) at its deepest. Because it sits so close to shore and is sheltered by the bay, the current is very mild if it runs at all, which is why instructors use it for training dives and why it is a regular choice for night dives.
