The Tollensesee is a glacial lake of 17.4 km² on the southern edge of Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 10.4 km long and one of the largest lakes in the state. Its diving is wartime and industrial history: the ruins of the former Torpedo Test Facility (TVA) on an artificial island in the north of the lake, sunken target platforms, an old work boat and other small wrecks, with stray torpedoes still lying on the bed. Underwater springs near Klein Nemerow add a natural site.
About diving in Tollensesee & Neubrandenburg
Dives to the TVA and the wrecks are boat dives, a short ride out from the Wassersportzentrum on the Augustastraße. Dives at the Torpedo Test Facility are allowed only in the company of the local bases or clubs, so a visiting diver books a guided boat dive rather than heading out alone. The town's dive shop runs guided dives every Saturday and Sunday. The club at the Wassersportzentrum no longer takes outside divers; the local dive club keeps its base at the Oberbach with direct access to the lake.
The TVA is the best-known site: from the surface down to about 15 m lie the foundations and remains of the old building above the water. The target platforms sit at about 25 m and look like huge floating jetties, an old work boat and smaller sports boats rest at about 17 m, and a disused intake pipe from a GDR-era pharmaceutical plant lies at about 18 m. Visibility is often poor, from 0.5 to 3 m on one July day, and below about 15 m the lake is completely dark, with a bed that is hard to make out in the murky water past 20 m.
The lake suits beginners and stays worth a return for experienced divers. The platform dives are a different matter: darkness, frequent poor visibility and depth make them no place for a newly certified diver. Munition still lies in the lake, so nothing is touched. Divers who want clear water should look elsewhere; the Tollensesee is about wrecks and ruins in the dark.

Dive types & marine life
The draw is the ruins and wrecks rather than animals, though fish shelter in the TVA's tangle of pipes, boilers and valves. In winter the fish gather in the deepest water, which reaches about 4 °C.

Questions divers ask
Can divers visit the Torpedo Test Facility on their own?+
No. Dives at the TVA are allowed only in the company of the local dive bases or clubs, which run boat dives there from the Wassersportzentrum.
Are the Tollensesee dives suitable for beginners?+
The lake suits beginners, but the target platforms at about 25 m are dark, often murky and deep, and they are no dive for a novice.
What should divers bring for the Tollensesee?+
A good primary light and a backup: below about 15 m the lake is completely dark. In winter the deep water falls to about 4 °C.
Is there anything to watch for at the TVA?+
Munition still lies in the lake, so nothing on the bed is touched or picked up.
