Tunnels of Love

The tunnels are in a wall on the Cap de Formentor side of the bay, and they are shallow: the whole system lies between 2 and 7 m. The boat drops you above them and you spend the dive in the maze, a series of parallel tunnels and rocky swim-throughs, moving from one to the next. Because the openings are so close to the surface, daylight follows you in and the tunnels glow blue from the far end, which is the effect that made the site famous. There is no need to go deep; the point of the dive is the shallow rock.

The shade inside is home to the animals that like it: large octopus, moray eels in the crevices, brown meagre, slipper lobsters and nudibranchs on the rock. Outside, SCUBANEO's list runs to barracuda, grouper, amberjack, scorpionfish, gilt-head bream, white seabream and broadnosed pipefish. Advanced divers can drop off the wall first to around 25 m, which Scuba Mallorca lists as 28 m maximum, before finishing in the tunnels; everyone else stays in the 2 to 7 m band, where a full tank goes a long way.
