Princess Alice Bank is a mid-Atlantic seamount 45 nautical miles southwest of Faial and 50 southwest of Pico, dived as a full-day two-tank trip from either island. The summit sits about 32 metres down, with published least depths ranging from 29 to 35 metres, and the platform around it falls away to 190 metres. Divers work the high point on a descent line while mobulas and other pelagics circle.

The dive

The dive starts with the crossing. The bank lies 45 nautical miles (83 km) southwest of Faial and 50 nautical miles (93 km) southwest of Pico, so the boat runs for hours before anyone gears up, and the trip is built as a full-day, two-tank outing. Over the summit the water is clear enough that the ocean floor can be made out from the surface, which is the cue that the boat is sitting over the western high point rather than the deeper ground around it.

Everything recreational happens on that high point. The shallowest western ground is published at 29, at 32 and at 35 metres depending on the source, and the platform beyond it drops to 190 metres, so the dive is usually run from the safety of a descent line rather than swum free across open water. That line is also what you come back up, because there is nothing else to hold on to.

What turns up is pelagic. Mobulas gather here in large groups, and shoals of barracuda, jacks and tuna work the same water, with wahoo and blue marlin further out; dolphins and sea turtles are also reported over the bank. Nothing is guaranteed and the encounter sets its own pace, so the group stays over the rock and near the line rather than chasing an animal off the summit into open water.

Background

Prince Albert I of Monaco's research vessel discovered the seamount on 9 July 1896, recording the platform 190 metres below the surface. Azorean fishermen have worked the bank since, and the European Union later established a reserve covering an area of 50 nautical miles around it, measured from the coasts of the closest islands, for their use. It is now both a fishing ground and one of the better-known offshore dive sites of the Atlantic.

Trips to the bank run from the beginning of July to mid-October; outside that window operators do not make the crossing.

Know before you go

  • Strong currents can occur at any time over the bank, which is why the dive is run from a descent line: get on the line at the surface and stay with it.
  • The bank is 45 to 50 nautical miles from land with no shelter on site, so any problem on the dive is hours away from help.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Princess Alice Bank?+

The shallowest western part of the bank is published at 29, at 32 and at 35 metres depending on the source, and the platform around it sits 190 metres down, so recreational diving is confined to the summit.

How far offshore is Princess Alice Bank?+

It lies about 45 nautical miles (83 km) southwest of Faial and 50 nautical miles (93 km) southwest of Pico, which makes it a full-day boat trip from either island.

When can you dive Princess Alice Bank?+

Operators run the trip from the beginning of July to mid-October. It is a full-day, two-tank crossing of 45 to 50 nautical miles, so whether it goes at all is decided on the morning from the swell and the forecast.
