Cathedral Wall
Shafts of light in a cracked cavern on the north wall

Cathedral Wall is the north-side wall of Balicasag, published at 10 to 30 m and cut with fissures, overhangs and small caves. The name comes from the light: a cracked cavern in the face lets shafts of sun down into it, and divers work along the wall from one opening to the next. Moray eels, octopus and lobsters live in the structure, with eagle rays and the occasional reef shark out in the blue.
Also known as The Cathedral.

The dive
The wall drops steeply on this side of the island and it is not a clean face: fissures run into it, overhangs cut back under the coral, and there are small caves you can put your head into. The dive is a working traverse from one of these to the next at somewhere between 10 and 30 m, with a moderate current normally pushing along the wall, so the route tends to be one-way.
The feature that names the site is a cracked cavern in the face where light comes down through the opening in visible shafts — enough of a spectacle that the wall gets called a cathedral rather than a drop-off. It is a short overhead rather than a cave dive: you go in, look up, and come back out, and it wants a torch and a bit of buoyancy discipline in front of the diver behind you.
The structure holds the life. Moray eels sit in the fissures, octopus and lobsters use the overhangs, and groupers hang under the ledges out of the current. On the open side eagle rays pass and reef sharks turn up occasionally, so it is worth turning away from the wall now and then. Turtles work the shallower coral at the top, which is where the dive finishes.

Season follows Balicasag: Nov–Jun gives the calmest crossings; the south-west monsoon and typhoons make Jul–Oct unreliable and can close the exposed sides.
Know before you go
- The fissures and the cavern are short overheads with no line: go in one at a time with a torch, and keep fins clear so the diver behind still has visibility.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Cathedral Wall?+
Sierra Madre Divers publish it at 10 to 30 m. The wall drops further, but the fissures, overhangs and the cavern that name the site all sit inside that range.
Why is it called Cathedral Wall?+
For the light. A cracked cavern in the wall lets sunlight down through the opening in visible shafts, and divers duck into it to look up. It is a short overhead rather than a cave, so a torch and single-file entry are the norm.
