Dolphin Rock
Tidal pinnacle off Bastimentos with sand channels and schooling fish

Dolphin Rock is a lava-rock pinnacle off Bastimentos Island whose tip breaks the surface at low tide, with sand channels radiating out from its base to about 20 metres. Swell and surge make it a weather-dependent dive, so operators run it alongside Tiger Rock in the calmer September-October window. Schooling fish crowd the structure and nurse sharks are regular in the sand channels around it.

The dive
Dolphin Rock is a lava outcrop off Bastimentos Island, close enough to the surface that its tip shows at low tide. From there the rock drops away to around 20 metres, with sand channels radiating out from its base. Schooling fish and juveniles crowd the structure in numbers well above what the in-archipelago reefs carry, which is the main reason operators make the trip out to it at all.
The sand channels around the base are a regular spot for nurse sharks resting out of the current, and the mix of hard structure and open sand brings in the odd larger pelagic passing through. Divers should expect to spend the dive working the rock itself rather than covering distance, since the interest is concentrated on and immediately around the pinnacle.
Swell and surge are the limiting factor. The rock sits exposed enough that a rough day makes it unsafe to approach by boat, let alone dive, so it is treated as a seasonal site and normally paired with Tiger Rock on the same calm-weather trip in September and October.

Season follows Bocas del Toro: Dry, calmer spells run February-April and September-October, when visibility improves and swell drops enough for Tiger Rock; the rest of the year is wetter and windier.
Know before you go
- Swell and surge at the rock can be significant; the site is only run in calm, settled weather.
- Sand channels and open structure mean limited shelter from current on the down-current side of the rock.
