Dahab's in-town entry, almost exactly in the centre of the town and a three-minute walk from the dive centres. The shallows are red gravel washed down from the wadi, deepening to a sea grass meadow and then to giant pinnacles of soft and hard coral, with statues on the sand between them and freediving lines hanging just offshore. The reef dive turns at a scrap-metal elephant at 18 metres; one operator publishes 18 to 60 metres for the site as a whole.

The dive
The entry sits in the middle of town, three minutes' walk from the dive centre door, and the site is a favourite for training, refresh dives and buoyancy checks. You start across the red gravel washed down from the wadi, which deepens into a sea grass meadow that is a likely place to spot turtles, before the coral begins. Conditions are described as ideal for courses from beginner through to deep, so what you agree on the beach matters more here than the entry does.
Off the beach the bottom is built of giant pinnacles covered in soft and hard corals with sand between them. Schools of barracuda are often the first thing you meet; napoleon wrasse, big groupers, morays, octopus, scorpionfish and crocodilefish work the coral, and turtles and eagle rays are seen along the reef regularly. Nudibranchs and worms repay a slow look along the coral.
On the sand, statues have been added in recent years to create an underwater museum of sorts, the most impressive of them a life-sized elephant assembled from old pieces of metal junk. It sits at 18 metres and is the cue to turn north onto the coral reef rather than to keep following the slope. Just offshore of the same entry hang the freediving training lines, weighted to 20, 35 and 40 metres — this is where most of Dahab's freedivers come to work on their skills, alongside the scuba traffic.
Background
The Lighthouse has long been the town's training reef: it is a favourite for courses, refresh dives and buoyancy checks, and most of Dahab's freedivers train off the same beach, on lines set just offshore to 20, 35 and 40 metres. In recent years statues have been added on the sandy areas to create an underwater museum of sorts, the most impressive of them a massive elephant assembled from old pieces of metal junk.

Season follows Dahab: Conditions stay calm and shore-diveable year-round; visibility peaks in spring and autumn shoulder months.
Know before you go
- The reef continues well past recreational depth directly off the entry, so agree a maximum depth before getting in rather than following the slope down on a training dive.

Questions divers ask
How deep is the Lighthouse in Dahab?+
The reef dive runs to about 18 metres: the metal elephant on the sand sits at that depth and marks the turn north onto the coral. One operator publishes 18 to 60 metres for the site as a whole, with the deeper end used for deep and technical courses, and the freediving lines are set at 20, 35 and 40 metres.
Is Lighthouse a good site for courses?+
It is the main training entry in Dahab — beginner through deep courses, refresh dives and buoyancy checks all run here, and it is a three-minute walk from the dive centres in the centre of town.
