Groupers on the scrapped hull of a ship thought lost in the Gallipoli campaign

Area photo: User:Ggia · CC BY-SA 3.0

An unidentified ship of about 60 m lies in pieces on the seabed some 1.5 miles off Aydıncık Burnu, on the south coast of Gökçeada. It is thought to date from the Gallipoli campaign. Very strong currents run over the site, so it is a dive for experienced divers, with groupers living on the remains.

Also known as Aydıncık Burnu batığı, Batık Gemi.

The dive

The wreck lies broken up at 27 m. Scrapping took away most of the ship, and what divers find on the bottom is the lower hull, the only part left on the seabed. Dusky groupers, brown meagre and leerfish move around the remains, and very strong currents run over this stretch of seabed.

No full record of the ship survives, and it is thought to be a casualty of the Gallipoli campaign. The wreck once lay whole on the seabed, but in 1965 it was broken up for scrap, and only the lower part of the hull was left behind on the bottom, where it still lies about 1.5 miles off Aydıncık Burnu. The ship was about 60 m long.
