Eden Rock
Long tunnels full of tarpon, straight off the shore
Area photo: c&rdunn · CC BY-SA 2.0
A shore dive right off George Town where the coral is cut through with long tunnels, and the tarpon hang inside them. Depth tops out around 14 m with the working average nearer 6 m, so bottom times are generous and the dive runs at whatever pace you set rather than a boat's.
Also known as Eden Rock Shore Dive.

The dive
Eden Rock is a long, relaxed shore dive. Depth tops out at around 14 m, and one logged profile here averaged 6 m (21 ft) with a maximum of 15 m (49 ft), so gas lasts and there is no rush to turn the dive. The reason to come is the tunnels: long swim-throughs cut through the coral, big enough to take at an easy pace without squeezing.
Tarpon are the fixture. They hold in and around the swim-throughs, big fish sitting almost still in the low light until you are alongside them, and squid turn up here too. Conditions are the other half of the appeal, with one visit logging 82F water and visibility over 30 m (100 ft) from a beach entry, which is not something most shore dives offer.

Questions divers ask
How deep is the Eden Rock shore dive?+
Around 14 m at its deepest, with a logged maximum of 15 m (49 ft) and an average nearer 6 m (21 ft). That shallow profile is the point: it leaves long bottom times and makes the dive suitable for newly qualified divers.
Can you dive Eden Rock from the shore?+
Yes. Eden Rock is a shore dive with a beginner-rated entry in George Town, alongside neighbouring Devil's Grotto, so no boat is needed and the dive runs to your own plan.
