Isla del Caño is a biological reserve 20 km off the Osa Peninsula, reached by open boat from Drake Bay in under an hour. The diving is on volcanic pinnacles and rock ridges rising from 30 m, where cool upwelling brings in whitetip reef sharks by the dozen, mobula rays and passing schools of jacks. Humpback whales use the bay on two separate migrations, from the north and the south, so they are audible underwater for much of the year.

About diving in Isla del Caño

Drake Bay has no dock. Boats are pushed off the sand, divers climb over the side while a crew member holds the bow into the surf, and gear crosses in dry bags and bins. The same wet landing happens in reverse on the way back. Trips are normally two tanks in a morning, and the surface interval is spent on the boat rather than ashore, since going ashore inside the reserve is restricted and daily visitor numbers are capped.

The reserve splits into two kinds of diving. On the sheltered side, shallow rock and hard-coral gardens sit in easy depths with little current, and that is where check dives, newer divers and anyone shooting macro end up. The outer bajos are a different proposition: isolated rock towers standing in open water, worked by current and cut by sharp thermoclines, where fish stack on the up-current face and you spend the dive tucked into the rock rather than cruising over it.

Visibility is the gamble. The same tower can open right up in the dry months and close down to a handful of metres once rain pushes the Térraba-Sierpe outflow along the coast. Green water is not automatically bad news, though: the cooler, plankton-heavy water that comes with upwelling is usually what brings the rays and the big schools in, so the clearest days are not always the best ones and the best ones are rarely the prettiest.

Two humpback populations use this coast, a northern group broadly December to March and a southern one from roughly July into November, so the calendar has two whale windows rather than one and the second overlaps the wettest, greenest months. Most people dive here as part of an Osa trip built around Corcovado rather than a dedicated dive week; the site list is short enough that seven days would start repeating, and December into April brings the most settled conditions.

2011–2025 averages. Sea surface: NOAA Coral Reef Watch, measured at the surface, so deeper water can run colder. Daytime high and rain: NASA POWER.

Dec–Apr is the dry season with the clearest water; Sep–Nov rain cuts visibility but overlaps the southern humpback migration.

Best months: January, February, March

Isla del Caño water temperature and weather by month

The sea surface stays between 28 and 30 °C (82–86 °F) all year. Most rain falls from May to November, peaking at about 390 mm (15 in) in July; January to March are the driest. Daytime highs reach 32 °C (90 °F) in March and drop to 28 °C (82 °F) in October. The coldest water here is about 26 °C (79 °F), so pack a 3 mm full suit.

Dive types & marine life

Whitetips and turtles show on close to every dive, year-round. Mobulas, eagle rays and heavy jack and barracuda schools come and go with the cooler, greener water, and dolphins are regular on the crossing. Humpbacks fall in two windows, roughly December to March and again July into November, and are more often heard underwater than seen.

How to get to Isla del Caño

Drake Bay is the base. Reach it by light aircraft to the village airstrip, or drive to Sierpe and take a boat down the river and out through the river mouth, with Palmar Sur the nearest airport for that route. All diving is by day boat: there is no shore diving and nowhere to stay on the island.
