Talang Wall
Crevices and overhangs down a 10 to 30 m wall

The wall on Koh Talang, the vertical counterpart to the boulder steps on the same island, running from 10 m down to 30 m. The face is broken by crevices and overhangs with coral formations on and around them, and parrotfish, butterflyfish and angelfish dart in and out of the gaps. It is dived the simple way: pick a depth and follow the rock.

The dive
Koh Talang's wall is the vertical half of the island's diving, and it reads the same way every time: drop to your chosen depth, put the rock on one shoulder and follow it. The face runs from about 10 m to 30 m, so you can dive it deep along the base, shallow along the top, or stage it, going deep first and then up onto the coral formations near the surface for the end of the dive.
The interest is in the detail of the face rather than in the open water beside it. Crevices and overhangs cut into the rock the whole way along, with coral growing over the edges of them, and parrotfish, butterflyfish and angelfish dart in and out of the gaps as you pass. A torch is worth carrying for the overhangs, where the colour daylight flattens comes back.

Season follows Koh Lipe & Tarutao: November-April is the dry-season diving window and February-April the best of it; from mid-June to mid-October only the Pak Bara speedboat runs and visibility falls toward 10 m.
