A short, easy drift to 12 m towards Flamingo Beach

Area photo: Julien Renoult · CC BY 4.0

A shallow drift off Playa Blanca that runs no deeper than 12 metres, carried towards Flamingo Beach on the flow. The water is clear and the conditions easy enough that beginners and intermediate divers both dive it, and the interest is on the bottom: stingrays, garden eels, crabs, octopus and angel sharks, with damselfish, parrotfish and small groupers around them.

The dive

You go in up-current and let the flow carry you towards Flamingo Beach, which is what makes this one of the easier dives on the coast: there is no leg back against the current and nothing to hold on to. The maximum depth is 12 metres and the water is normally clear, so the group stays together and the dive is spent looking at the bottom rather than managing a profile.

The bottom is the point. Stingrays and angel sharks are recorded on the sand, garden eels stand out of it and crabs work along it, with octopus and cuttlefish tucked into the rock and damselfish, parrotfish and small groupers among the reef fish over the harder ground. It is a shallow, slow dive that suits a camera, and what limits it is gas and cold rather than any depth on the computer.
