Crack Reef is a wall dive on the northern point of the Layang-Layang atoll, worked at 10 to 25 m in moderate current. The marine life along it is dense, including the rare black coral the reef is known for, and the site sits close enough to Navigator Lane that the right current lets you cover both of them in a single dive.

The dive
The site sits on the northern point of the atoll, very close to Navigator Lane, so when the current runs the right way the two are dived as one. You follow the wall in the 10 to 25 m band with the reef on one shoulder, moving with the flow rather than working against it, and there is no need to push deeper unless something out in the blue is worth it.
Most of what is worth stopping for is small and on the wall itself: the huge sea fans hold pygmy seahorses, and sleeping leopard sharks are another regular find. If you do drop deeper and the day goes your way, schooling hammerheads pass in the blue off the wall. The dive finishes in the shallow, colourful coral garden, which gives you a safety stop with something to look at and a last chance for photographs.

Season follows Layang-Layang: The single resort opens roughly March to August and the atoll is unreachable otherwise; hammerhead schooling peaks Mar–May.

Can Crack Reef and Navigator Lane be done together?+
Yes. The two sites sit very close together on the north of the atoll, and when the current is right you can cover both in a single dive.
