Shark's Cave

An undercut at 25 m where reef sharks rest through the day

Area photo: matthew lee · CC BY 2.0

Shark's Cave sits close to D-Wall on the same stretch of atoll rim, and the site is an undercut in the wall at about 25 metres where whitetip reef sharks rest below. It is dived deep, 25 to 40 metres, with current usually none to light. Grey reef, leopard and nurse sharks are all seen here, and hammerheads school off the wall.

Also known as Sharks Cave.

The dive

The site is a short way from D-Wall on the same face of the atoll, and the dive starts with a descent down the wall to about 25 metres, where the rock is undercut. That overhang is the site and it is what the name refers to. Current here is usually none to light, so you can hold position off the opening and look in rather than being pushed past it, which matters because the interest is inside and below rather than along the face.

Whitetip reef sharks rest below the overhang through the day, and they are what the site is dived for. Grey reef sharks, leopard sharks and nurse sharks are all possible on the same stretch, and the schooling hammerheads Layang-Layang is known for pass off the wall in season, so it is worth turning to check the blue between passes.

The profile bottoms out around 40 metres, so the deep part comes first and the rest of the dive is spent working back up the wall. Gas goes quickly at that depth and the ascent is made along the face, using the reef as a reference rather than hanging in open water, which is straightforward given how little current the site usually carries.
