D-Wall

D-Wall is the atoll's signature drop, a vertical face that falls away from the reef into 2,000 metres of open ocean. Divers work the top of it, between 25 and 40 metres, with a medium current running along the face. Sea fans on the wall hold pygmy seahorses and frogfish, while the water off it is where the schooling hammerheads appear.

Also known as D Wall.

The dive

You drop onto the top of the wall and it falls away vertically beneath you, continuing to around 2,000 metres, far past anything a diver sees. The dived section is the top of that face, roughly 25 to 40 metres, and a medium current usually runs along it, so the dive works as a slow drift with the wall on one shoulder and open water on the other. There is nothing shallow underneath you at any point, which is what makes buoyancy control the whole job here.

Work the face and it becomes a macro dive: sea fans growing out from the wall hold pygmy seahorses, and frogfish sit along the same stretch, both of which need a slow pass and a careful eye rather than a swim-by. Turn away from the wall and the other reason divers come is out there instead. Hundreds of schooling hammerheads have been seen off D-Wall, out in the blue rather than along the face, so it is worth breaking off the macro to look out every minute or two.

At around 40 metres the wall breaks before continuing down, and that ledge is the working limit on this site: going deeper means equipment beyond recreational kit. Plan the deep part of the profile first, then let the current carry you gradually up the face, making the ascent along the wall with it as a visual reference rather than hanging out in open water.

Season follows Layang-Layang: Closed to visitors since the resort's licence was revoked in January 2025. When it operated, the season ran March to August, with hammerheads peaking in April and May.

Know before you go

  • The wall breaks at around 40 m and then keeps dropping; do not go below that ledge without equipment and training for it, as the face gives no visual cue that you are descending.

Questions divers ask

How deep does D-Wall go?+

The wall itself drops to about 2,000 metres. Recreational diving takes place on the top 25 to 40 metres of the face, with a break in the wall at roughly 40 metres treated as the limit for divers without specialist equipment.
