Snapper Ledge

Snapper Ledge lies south-west of Layang-Layang island and is dived as a drift along the reef at 25 to 40 m. The current here is often very strong, and it is also the reason the water is the clearest on the atoll. Hard and soft coral, gorgonians and thousands of reef fish - goatfish, wrasse, fusiliers, pufferfish, parrotfish - cover the ledge.

The dive
You drop onto the reef south-west of the island and let the current take you along the ledge, finishing wherever the boat picks the group up. The flow is what defines the dive: it is often very strong, and it is the reason the water is as clear as it is, with visibility normally around 50 m. The working range is 25 to 40 m, so this is a short deep pass rather than a dive to work slowly across.
The ledge carries hard and soft coral with gorgonians standing off it, and thousands of reef fish over the top - goatfish, wrasse, fusiliers, pufferfish and parrotfish holding in the flow. With the current doing the swimming the dive itself is relaxed, provided you stay off the coral, keep close to your buddy and the guide, and accept that there is no going back to something you passed. Ascend as a group and drift through the safety stop.

Season follows Layang-Layang: The single resort opens roughly March to August and the atoll is unreachable otherwise; hammerhead schooling peaks Mar–May.
Know before you go
- The current at Snapper Ledge is often very strong: stay close to your buddy and the dive guide, and expect to drift through the ascent and safety stop rather than hold a fixed spot.
