Baixa do Carneiro

The swim out is the whole of the approach: in from the stairs at the Complexo Balnear do Lido and about 25 metres on the surface before you drop. The top of the fall sits at 5 metres, shallow enough to hold as a reference on the way back in, and the ground falls away from there to 18 metres.

It is a small dive by the island's standards and that is the point of it — a site for all levels where the depth never forces the profile, where the deep end can be taken first and the return leg spent along the top of the fall in the shallows. Black moray eels sit in the rock and mullet work the shallows; the frogfish that occasionally turns up is the reason people dive it repeatedly rather than once.
