Kadırga Cove

Hundreds of Hellenistic amphorae still lying on the rocks

Kadırga (Galleon) Cove is the farthest site from Marmaris, a rocky slope opposite the Kadırga lighthouse. Its draw is archaeology: hundreds of amphorae and the remains of a ship from the Hellenistic period rest on the rocky seabed where they fell more than two thousand years ago.

The dive

The dive drops from the surface down the rocky slope opposite the lighthouse, which stretches to about 40 m. At 15 m lies the field of amphorae and, among them, the remains of a Hellenistic ship, its cargo still on the rock where it came to rest.

Background

The remains at Kadırga belong to a ship of the Hellenistic period. In front of the Kadırga lighthouse building, its cargo of hundreds of amphorae still clings to the rocky seabed at 15 m, exactly where the jars fell more than two thousand years ago.
