Cueva del Pont d'en Gil

The boat anchors in the bay beside the entrance, an enormous crack whose base is at 12 metres, though 6 metres is deep enough to get inside. Once in, the group chooses the order: surface inside the cavern first, or run the underwater part and come up later. Either way the passage leads back more than 200 metres under the cliff, past stalactites and stalagmites.

At the far end of Pont d'en Gil there is a second, smaller cave, which looks out onto English Beach. Coming back, divers either leave by the large entrance they came in through or take the emergency exit, a tunnel that puts them straight into the bay where the boat is waiting. Which of the two is used depends on the experience of the divers on the dive.

Life inside is small and rewards a torch held low: prawns, greater hermit crabs, cotton-spinners, black brittle stars, meagre in the darker sections, and sometimes a European conger. Out on the sand near the entrance there are marbled electric rays, and Mediterranean morays sit in the rock around the crack, so the last few minutes of the dive are worth as much attention as the gallery itself.
