Katedrala
Light falling through a perforated roof, entrance at 27 m
A system of connected caves in the limestone off the south-west side of Premuda, entered at 27 m and running up through linked chambers to about 12 m. The roof is riddled with holes, so light falls in from every side and the dive never quite feels like a cave penetration. Overfishing has thinned the life inside; the light is the reason divers come.
Also known as The Cathedral.

The dive
Boats work out of Uvala Široka on the south-west side of the island, where a buoy with a line for dinghies sits in the bay itself. The entrance to the cave system is at 27 m, and from there the dive runs through linked rooms rather than along one passage: some parts of the system reach a little past 30 m, while the chambers lead upward and can be followed back to about 12 m.
The roof is what makes the site. It is drilled through with holes and light falls in from every side, so you never quite get the sense of having gone inside a cave, and the rooms stay lit as you work up through them from the entrance towards the shallower end of the system. Time the dive for midday, which is when the most light reaches the chambers.
Marine life is the weak part of the dive. The location is not protected and overfishing has cleared out much of what used to live here, so encounters are a matter of luck rather than expectation: red mullet, the odd forkbeard, a scorpionfish against the rock. The dive itself is not especially demanding, but beginners are advised not to go straight into the caves.

Season follows Premuda: Apr–Oct is the season with the clearest water in late summer; the bura closes the exposed offshore wreck at short notice.
Know before you go
- The entrance is at 27 m and parts of the system reach past 30 m, so gas and no-stop time go quickly in an overhead. Set turn pressures before you drop.
- Light through the roof does not make this any less of an overhead environment: carry a torch and a backup, and keep the route out of the chambers in sight.

How deep is Katedrala on Premuda?+
The entrance is at 27 m and some parts of the system reach a little past 30 m. The chambers lead upward, so divers work back through them to around 12 m, which makes the dive span roughly 12 to 30 m.

Around midday. The cave roof is perforated and lets light in from every side, and the most light reaches the chambers in the middle of the day, which is when the site is at its most impressive.
