Papua Passage

Eagle rays over the sand in a cut through the reef

A natural opening in the fringing reef on Rarotonga's south coast, dived between 8 and 22 m. The cut is walled with coral and floored with sand, and eagle rays crossing that sand are what the operator leads with. It is listed as suitable for all divers, which on this coast is not true of every passage.

The dive

Papua Passage is a break in the fringing reef on the south coast, and the dive explores around the opening rather than following a set route. Reef stands either side of the cut, the floor between is sand, and the depth over it runs from about 8 m at the inner end to 22 m at the deep end of the site. The sand is worth as much attention as the coral: eagle rays cross it low, and they are the reason most divers ask for this site.

How the water is moving decides the shape of the dive, and no source publishes current, visibility or site-specific season figures for Papua Passage. The same operator flags fast-moving water in Avaavaroa Passage along the same coast and warns that the passages of the south can be dangerous, so take the entry point, the direction and the turnaround from the briefing on the day rather than assuming a gentle drift out through the cut.

Know before you go

  • Rarotonga's southern reef passages move water and the operator warns they can be dangerous; dive it on the day's briefing and accept a cancellation when conditions are not suitable.

Questions divers ask

How deep is Papua Passage?+

The passage is dived between 8 and 22 m, shallowest at the inner end and deepest where it opens out. No source publishes a current or visibility figure for the site, so the day's briefing sets the profile.

Is Papua Passage suitable for beginners?+

The operator lists it as suitable for all diving experience levels. The deep end is 22 m, so it is a straightforward recreational profile, but currents in Rarotonga's southern passages vary and the briefing on the day decides how the dive is run.
