Chimneys through the barrier reef that flood with daylight

A system of caves, corridors and chimneys that cuts clean through the barrier reef, dived to about 25 m in the reef's own foundations. You move through narrow galleries in half-light until a chimney opens overhead and daylight floods the chamber. There is little coral inside, but the passages funnel large animals through.

The dive
The dive drops onto the barrier reef and works down into the rock itself, reaching about 25 m in what one guide calls the foundations of the reef. What follows is a linked sequence of caves, corridors and chimneys that pierce the barrier right through, so the route is a matter of threading them in order rather than swimming a reef profile.
Inside, visibility falls away and you move in semi-darkness, which is exactly what makes the light work: chimneys open overhead, and sunlight drops through them in shafts against the blue of the lagoon beyond. Divers who have done it describe the atmosphere inside the galleries as cathedral-like.
There is no coral community to speak of in the tunnels, but the passages concentrate bigger animals — giant trevally come through, and a resting shark is sometimes tucked into a chamber. The galleries are narrow enough that touching the walls or the ceiling is a real risk, so the dive is run slowly, in trim, with hands off everything.

Season follows Rodrigues: May–Jul and Oct–Nov are the calmest windows; Jan–Mar brings cyclone risk and August can be windy.
Know before you go
- The galleries are tight and dark — you must not touch the sides or the ceiling, so reliable buoyancy control is a condition of the dive rather than a nicety.
- Visibility inside the tunnels is poor compared with the open reef, and parts of the route are done in semi-darkness.
