Lugbung Island

A shallow coral canyon on the tip of a rocky islet

Lugbung, also called Logbon, is a small rocky island about 1.7 km off the north coast of Romblon Island, and it carries several dives. The one on the island's tip starts at 3 metres and drops gently to 15, where the corals are thickest; the canyon on the south side is the topographical dive, cut into valleys and colourful slopes. Both are 15 to 20 minutes out by boat.

Also known as Logbon Island.

The dive

The dive on the tip of Logbon starts in about 3 metres of water and drops gently — no wall, no step — to around 15 metres, and that shallow band is where the most prolific corals are. Nothing on that route is deep, so gas and bottom time end the dive rather than the profile, and the shallow water keeps the natural light good enough to shoot without much fuss.

The canyon on the island's south side is the scenic half of Logbon: an underwater landscape of valleys and ridges densely covered with corals and sponges, swum through rather than along a single contour. Wikivoyage lists it to 40 metres, deeper than the coral band most of the dive works, and rates it as needing no special skills — shallow enough at the top to snorkel. The reefs around Romblon, Logbon, Alad and Cobrador are described as almost undisturbed hard and soft coral.

Season follows Romblon: Nov–Jun is the settled season; typhoons and the south-west monsoon make Jul–Oct unreliable for the boat crossing.
