Santa Maria di Leuca
Red and yellow gorgonian forests on the banks off the cape where two seas meet
Santa Maria di Leuca sits at the southern tip of the Salento peninsula, where the Ionian and the Adriatic meet, and its dives run on both sides of the point. The coast offers a sunken statue of the Madonna for novices, the upright Turkish freighter Tevfik Kaptan I and the walls of Punta Meliso. The gorgonian banks are the deeper draw: Paseddhu and Le Ancore carry red and yellow gorgonians, with anthias, moray eels and large groupers among the fans of Paseddhu.
About diving in Santa Maria di Leuca
Guided dives at Leuca go out by RIB to sites on both flanks of the cape, the Ionian and the Adriatic, each with its own character. The menu covers the whole spread of the coast: the statue under the lighthouse, the Turkish freighter Tevfik Kaptan I, submerged caves, walls and banks. That range lets a trip mix easy, shallow dives with deeper ones on the gorgonian banks, and some ledges begin as shallow as 6 m. Paseddhu, a submerged dome, is the most demanding dive on the cape.
Underwater the cape is a coast of walls and banks. At Punta Meliso, right at the meeting point of the two seas, two walls fall to about 50 m; experienced divers descend the left-hand wall in open water to a ledge patrolled by dense schools of barracuda and big groupers. The banks hold the colour: Paseddhu, Le Ancore and Secca del Pisello all carry gorgonians, and anthias, moray eels, lobsters and large groupers move among the red and yellow fans of Paseddhu. Tuna, rays, eagle rays and ocean sunfish pass in the blue.
The cape suits two kinds of diver. Novices get simple dives sheltered from current, such as the Madonna statue at 15 m. Experienced divers come for the gorgonian banks, which start around 30 m on Paseddhu and run to 40 m on Le Ancore. Current is part of that deeper ground, strong on Secca del Pisello and often medium to strong on the Punta Meliso plateau, so the banks are dives for divers at ease with both depth and moving water.

Dive types & marine life
Anthias, moray eels, lobsters and large groupers live among the gorgonians of Paseddhu, and dense schools of barracuda patrol the ledge off Punta Meliso. Ocean sunfish are sighted often at the start of summer, while tuna, rays and eagle rays are the more likely sightings in the blue.

Questions divers ask
Can beginners dive at Santa Maria di Leuca?+
Yes. The Madonna dei due Mari statue lies at 15 m in water sheltered from current and serves as a training ground for novice divers.
What experience do the gorgonian banks need?+
They are dives for experienced divers. Le Ancore is moored at 27 m with its fans deeper still, and strong prevailing currents sweep that bank, bringing the nutrients the gorgonians feed on.
Which side of the cape do the boats dive?+
Both. Sites lie on the Ionian and the Adriatic flanks, and Punta Meliso and the Madonna statue sit right where the two seas meet.
