Santander & Isla de Mouro

Rock passages and a domed rock formation at a reserve island off Santander

Santander lies on the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain, and its diving centres on the Isla de Mouro, a nature reserve since 1986 at the mouth of the Bay of Santander. Day boats work the island's rock passages, overhangs and swim-throughs, among them La Catedral, El Túnel and La Corbera, mostly between 3 and 20 m. Offshore, the El Bálamo ridge runs from 22 to 60 m in open-sea current for experienced divers.

About diving in Santander & Isla de Mouro

Dives here start from boats. The centres work from marinas, among them Marina del Cantábrico in Camargo and the marina at Pedreña, and fast inflatables carry divers out to the Isla de Mouro at the mouth of the Bay of Santander. Boats tie up in the island's cove, an anchorage relatively sheltered from wind and swell, while the north-northwest face of the island takes the full force of the Cantabrian in winter.

In the cove, at 3 to 8 m, small life hides among brown algae and meadows of a lower red weed called caloca. West of the cove an overhanging wall at 10 to 12 m holes up large conger eels, and at La Corbera a maze of passages and channels at 18 to 20 m holds big wrasse and sea bream, spider crabs, octopus and shoals of bogue. Out on the open-sea shoals the life turns pelagic: tuna, schools of sea bass, horse mackerel and sardines, and now and then a dolphin.

The inshore dives suit divers prepared for cold water, and El Camello is gentle enough for novices. The offshore shoals are another kind of diving: open sea, strong currents and decompression as a matter of course, so they are only for experienced divers, who also need to keep clear of broken fishing nets on the bottom at El Bálamo and stay near the wall.

Through the winter the Cantabrian swell beats on the north-northwest face of the Isla de Mouro. The season opens in late April or early May. April to September is the best stretch, and visibility in spring and summer can pass 15 m; mornings and the early afternoon give the clearest water. The season closes in late October, when the water starts to cool and the swell comes back in, making the sites difficult to enjoy until the following spring.

Best months: May, June, July, August, September

Dive types & marine life

Octopus, spider crabs, wrasse and sea bream live around Mouro's rock, and large conger eels hold the holes in the overhang on the island's west side. Tuna, sea bass, horse mackerel and sardines pass over the offshore shoals, where a dolphin is a matter of luck rather than a fixture.
