Sochi & Lazarevskoye

The tug Pervansh, a wreck at 19 m off Sochi

Sochi's stretch of the Russian Black Sea coast, from Adler and Sirius north to Lazarevskoye, is dived all year from boats and from the shore. The draw is wreck diving: the tug Pervansh lies at 19 m some 1.8 km off Sochi, and the Rockliffe is the pick of the Lazarevskoye boat dives. Rocky reefs at Cape Luchezarny and the Uch-Dere canyon give shallower dives, and most dives stay in a 3 to 19 m band.

About diving in Sochi & Lazarevskoye

Dives run from boats with a personal instructor, and shore dives are offered as well, at their best when the water is clearest. Boats leave daily from Mamaika in Sochi for the rocky reef and the canyon at Cape Luchezarny. At Uch-Dere the reef begins almost at the shore, but going out by boat saves the swim. Time underwater on a wreck or night dive runs 20 to 25 minutes. Night dives use dedicated lighting and every diver carries a torch. A dive called off for weather can be moved to another day.

The rocky reef starts on a plateau thick with vegetation and slopes down to 10 m, with croakers, crabs, scorpionfish and even rays. Cape Luchezarny spans 3 to 11 m with a varied flora and fauna, and at Uch-Dere a rocky floor with patches of sand holds a canyon 200 m long. The wrecks carry their own life: mussels have colonised the stern of the Rockliffe, rapa whelks and seaweed cover the rest of the ship, and large crabs hide in its recesses.

Sochi suits newcomers and experienced divers alike. The Uch-Dere canyon is a favourite for first dives, the Rockliffe wreck is open to novices as well as experienced divers, and children can dive from the age of 10. Courses follow PADI standards, and night dives call for a special certificate and an extra course. The Yan Tomp is the exception to the easy diving: it is rated hard even for experienced divers, with visibility of about 5 to 7 m.

Diving runs through the whole year, and only strong storms interrupt it. Early spring is one of the two best windows for shore dives, with the cleanest water and good visibility. Off Adler the sea warms earlier than on the rest of the coast, so by late May and early June visitors there are already swimming and diving. Boat dives carry on through the summer and autumn, and late autumn brings the second clear-water window for shore entries.

Best months: March, November

Dive types & marine life

Divers off Adler regularly meet bottlenose and common dolphins and harbour porpoises, along with spiny dogfish and catsharks. Seahorses perform their courtship around Luchezarnaya rock, and crabs, rays, horse mackerel, grey mullet and croakers are common on the rocky and sandy floor at Uch-Dere.
