Tahiti & Teahupo'o

Grey, lemon and blacktip reef sharks at La Vallée Blanche

Tahiti's dive centres work from marinas on the main island and on the Tahiti Iti peninsula, reaching about 30 sites of drop-offs, faults, springs and wrecks. Guided dives reach 15 to 29 m depending on the diver's level. La Vallée Blanche draws grey, lemon and blacktip reef sharks, La Source adds turtles over an underwater spring, and a sunken Catalina seaplane gives a wreck dive. Sites south of Teahupo'o are dived only on occasional trips when the sea allows.

About diving in Tahiti & Teahupo'o

Dives start from marinas, where the boats tie up beside the centres: divers kit up and step aboard. A typical outing is a morning of 1 or 2 dives in a small group, each lasting 45 to 60 minutes, with the sites picked on the day for the weather and the group's level. On the peninsula, boats mostly work about ten sites around Papeari, Toahotu and Vairao, plus two on the east coast. Once a month, when conditions allow, they run south of Teahupo'o to Fer à Cheval and the Grotto. The peninsula boats also run night dives on the reef in calm weather.

Underwater, Tahiti is a mix of drop-offs, faults, springs, peaks, canyons and wrecks, in the ocean and in the lagoon. The peninsula's walls fall with a dizzying verticality, so every site there is multilevel. Sharks set the tone: grey, lemon and blacktip reef sharks at La Vallée Blanche, whitetips at La Source, with eagle rays, schools of jacks and barracuda, humphead Maori wrasse, turtles, angelfish, clownfish, morays and nudibranchs. Every shark species has been protected here since 2012, and the waters became a marine mammal sanctuary in 2002.

Tahiti suits Open Water divers and FFESSM Level 1 divers: most sites are open to them, and the Aquarium near Papeete is a gentle first dive. Experienced divers can go deeper on the sites that reach 50 m. Divers drawn by the name Teahupo'o should expect to dive the peninsula's regular sites, since the trips south of it depend on the sea. Choosing an established centre matters too: some outfits do not go far past the marina, and their safety standards have been questioned.

Dive types & marine life

Turtles at La Source and sharks at La Vallée Blanche are the signature encounters, and dolphins sometimes join a dive. Humpback whales are present between Paea and Mataiea from late July to mid-November, roughly 20 July to 20 November, and the whale-watching trips run only in that season.

Questions divers ask

What certification is needed to dive Tahiti?+

FFESSM Level 1 or PADI or SSI Open Water is the minimum for the guided morning dives, and most sites are open at that level. A few sites go to 50 m and are kept for divers certified for that depth.

Can divers dive at Teahupo'o?+

Only occasionally. The peninsula boats mostly dive about ten sites around Papeari, Toahotu and Vairao, and run a monthly trip south of Teahupo'o to Fer à Cheval and the Grotto when conditions allow.

When are humpback whales around Tahiti?+

From late July to mid-November, between Paea and Mataiea. The whale trips run only in that window; some centres stop diving then, while others dive all year.

How do divers get to the dive centres?+

Flights land at Faa'a International Airport (PPT) near Papeete, and taxis reach any part of the island, including Marina Taina in Punaauia and Phaeton Bay Marina on the peninsula.

Are the sharks protected?+

Yes. Every shark species in French Polynesia has been protected since 2012, and its waters have been a marine mammal sanctuary since 2002.
