Giant's Castle is Tofo's closest deep site, a 6 m crenellated wall running roughly 2 km north to south about 6 km off the beach. Strong north-to-south current is the norm, and the dive is run as a drift along the wall at 25-30 m, past three manta cleaning stations and the caves at its base.

The dive
The boat run is short, 6 km and about 10 minutes from the beach, and this is where Tofo dives when the current is up. You drop in on top of the wall and let the water carry you south along it, working a band between 25 and 30 m. The wall is only about 6 m tall but it runs for roughly 2 km, notched along its length like a battlement, with caves at its base where the rock meets sand.
Three manta cleaning stations sit along the wall, and the ray list runs well past the mantas: eagle, devil, blotched and Kuhl's rays all pass, along with smalleye stingrays and bowmouth guitar sharks. Huge potato groupers hold on the structure, and great barracuda, kingfish and schooling giant trevally work the current above the wall.
A resident loggerhead turtle is often on the reef as well. With the drift carrying you there is no swimming back to a feature you have passed, so the dive is a matter of holding wall level, watching out into the blue, and leaving the rock for a mid-water ascent when the group lifts off. The deepest point on the site is 34 m, so keep an eye on the profile if the drift takes you deeper than the wall.

Season follows Tofo: The best diving runs from after Easter to early July; August and September bring the humpback peak but choppy seas.
Know before you go
- Current commonly runs strong from north to south. Tofo operators pick this site when the current is up elsewhere, so it only works as a one-way drift with the group together.
- The wall tops out around 25 m and the site bottoms at 34 m, which leaves little bottom time; nitrox and a close watch on no-decompression limits are both recommended.

Questions divers ask
Why is it called Giant's Castle?+
The site is named after a mountain peak in South Africa's Drakensberg, chosen for the scale of the wall and the size of the animals on it: a 6 m rampart with a notched top running about 2 km north to south along the coast.
How deep is Giant's Castle?+
The dive works the wall between 25 and 30 m, where the rock meets sand. The deepest point on the site is 34 m, which is why Advanced Open Water and Enriched Air are both recommended here.
