Manta Reef
Manta cleaning stations on an amphitheatre of rock at 21-26 m

Manta Reef is an amphitheatre-shaped rock reef 16 km down the coast from Tofo, dived as a gentle drift from north to south. Cleaning stations along it are what the boats make the 30-minute run for, though Tofo Scuba now reports mantas on roughly 15% of dives here. The reef top sits at about 18 m, the working depth is 21-26 m, and a wall on the southern side drops to 30 m.

The dive
The reef is a tabular slab of rock standing 3-4 m off the sand, its surface relatively flat, and the plan is a drift from north to south along it. Currents and surge rarely affect the site, so the water usually lets you pick your own pace rather than dictating it. At the northern end the reef builds into Manta Pinnacles, a formation rising from 26 m to 18 m with an 8 m wall, a swim-through and an overhang to work around.
The cleaning stations are the reason to be here, and the dive is largely spent settled near one, low and still, watching for mantas coming in over the reef; both reef and giant mantas are recorded on the site. A resident loggerhead and a resident green turtle use the same reef, potato bass hold over the harder structure, and parrotfish, scorpionfish, clownfish and moray eels work the fish-filled sections between the pinnacles.
Southwards the reef ends in a wall that descends to 30 m, cut with cracks and ledges worth a slow pass; soft corals, starfish, sea urchins and nudibranchs cover the rock, and 20 m visibility is not uncommon. The drift finishes over the southern end of the reef, and with the average depth around 21 m the profile is short enough that nitrox is worth carrying.

Season follows Tofo: The best diving runs from after Easter to early July; August and September bring the humpback peak but choppy seas.
Know before you go
- Mantas here are on cleaning stations: hold good buoyancy, stay off the rock and let the rays set the distance.
- Currents and surge rarely affect this reef, but occasional currents do run and the dive plan has to be adjusted around them.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Manta Reef?+
The reef top is at about 18 m and most of the dive runs between 21 and 26 m, with an average of around 21 m. The wall on the southern side descends to 30 m, the deepest point on the site.
Do you need to be an advanced diver for Manta Reef?+
PADI Advanced Open Water is recommended, with Enriched Air on top of it, because the working depth is 21-26 m and the site is reachable only by boat. Good buoyancy control matters as much as the certification, since the dive is spent close to cleaning stations.
