The Chimney

A tunnel descent from 14 m down to 22 m past small pinnacles

Area photo: dronepicr · CC BY 2.0

A reef on the south side of Agios Georgios where the descent runs through a passage. The entrance is at 14 metres, the tunnel drops to 22 past small assorted pinnacles, and it opens onto a plateau of sponges, corals and varied sea life. The depth range runs to 29 metres, and the operator asks for Advanced Open Water and advises nitrox.

Also known as Chimney.

The dive

The entrance is at 14 metres, on the south side of Agios Georgios. From there the descent is the feature: you drop through a passage, a tunnel that takes you down to 22 metres, with small assorted pinnacles standing along the way. It is a vertical route rather than a swim along a face, so the first part of the dive is spent going down rather than along.

The tunnel then opens up into a plateau with sponges, colourful corals and varied sea life, and the site's stated limit is 29 metres. The certification bar reflects that: the operator asks for Advanced Open Water and advises nitrox. Plan the gas around the deep first half, since the descent through the chimney comes at the start of the dive rather than being a feature you save for later.

Know before you go

  • The descent runs through a passage from 14 m down to 22 m - an overhead section right at the start, so carry a light and fix the buddy order before you drop in.
