Agios Petros

One of the area's dive highlights, and an ideal night dive

Area photo: dronepicr · CC BY 2.0

A reef a short boat ride from the dive base, open to entry-level divers and listed by the operator for photography and marine biology as much as for the topography. Rock and sand plateaus alternate and step gradually down to 18 metres, where the reef itself rises about six metres vertically off the bottom.

Also known as Agios Petros' Reef, St. Peter's Reef.

The dive

The run out is 0.3 nautical miles, so you are in the water within minutes of leaving the base. Underneath you the seabed alternates between rock and sand, laid out as a series of plateaus that lead you deeper in steps rather than dropping away, which makes the descent easy to control and keeps the whole dive inside entry-level limits.

At 18 metres the plateaus end at the reef itself, a formation that expands vertically about six metres off the bottom and fosters the biodiversity Mediterranean rock reefs are known for. Work along it, then finish shallow over the plateaus; a full profile runs 45 minutes to an hour. The dive centre also rates the site as one of the diving highlights of the area and an ideal place for night diving.
