Lumayag
Thousands of jackfish over a black-coral wall
Photo: Andrew Holle · CC0
Lumayag is a wall on the Anda coast between the Blue Star and Coco White resorts, dropping into a sand slope past 30 m and hung with black coral bushes and gorgonian fans. It is the one dive here with a big-fish draw: a school of jackfish numbering in the thousands, sitting anywhere between 10 and 40 m depending on the hour and the current.
Also known as Lumayak.

The dive
The boat puts you on the piece of coast between the two resorts, and the shape of the dive is simple: reef wall on one side, open blue on the other. Work the wall first. Black coral bushes decorate the face, gorgonian fans hold pygmy seahorses, and the macro that Anda is dived for is spread across the wall itself and the sand at the foot of it.
The jackfish are the reason to come back. The school hangs in the water between Blue Star and Coco White and shifts through a band from 40 m up to 10 m with the time of day and the current, so the same site can mean a deep swim out into the blue on one dive and a shallow hover on the next. Below the face the reef turns into a sandy slope running past 30 m, and it is the blue off it, rather than the reef, that produces Anda's larger fish.

Season follows Anda: Nov–Jun is the main season; the south-west monsoon and typhoons make Jul–Oct unreliable on this exposed coast.
Know before you go
- The jackfish school ranges as deep as 40 m, below the base of the wall itself — agree a maximum depth on the boat instead of following the school down.
