Batu Mandi is one of the southern sites in the Bangka cluster and pairs a shallow coral slope with a wall. The dive starts at 3 m and descends slowly through coral until the ground gives way to a wall dropping to 30 m, which means one site covers both a snorkelling depth and a proper deep profile.

The dive
You start at 3 m and descend slowly, surrounded by coral, rather than dropping straight onto the deep part. The slope carries you out until it reaches the wall, which goes down to 30 m and is the feature the site is dived for. Most teams run the wall first at depth, keeping it on one shoulder so navigation stays simple, then come back up onto the coral above it for the rest of the dive.
The two halves are dived differently. The wall is a swim along a vertical face with the depth decided by the plan, while the coral above is a slow browse in water shallow enough to stretch the tank out. Because the site works from 3 m upward it is also suitable for snorkelling, so a boat can put divers and non-divers in at the same place, and the shallow coral doubles as the safety stop on the way back.
