Byblos, Amchit & Batroun
Barbour's natural stone arches set into the Amchit Wall
The coast around Byblos and Amchit, 35 km north of Beirut, is wall country. The Amchit Wall runs along the shoreline, with Barbour's natural stone arches set into it and Bubbles Cliff on the same stretch, while the Pyramids face the sandy beach of Jbeil. Amchit has some of the clearest water on the Lebanese coast, and at Batroun the Cement Freighter Wreck adds a wreck to a list that is otherwise rock and wall.
About diving in Byblos, Amchit & Batroun
Bubbles Cliff is best reached by boat, though it can be dived from the shore after a long surface swim, and the Amchit Wall lies only a few hundred metres off the beach. Natural currents sweep through the Amchit sites continuously, which keeps the water clean and the ecosystem in good health. Weather, not temperature, is what stops diving on this exposed coast: wind and swell build quickly and boat dives are the first to be called off, and in summer the sea often builds through the day, which is why boats go out early.
Walls shape the diving. The Amchit Wall is a vertical reef running along the coastline, its top at 20 m and its deepest points at 50 m, and both Barbour and Bubbles Cliff sit on it. The Maritime Wall, averaging 40 m, is marked by pyramid-shaped formations and a small, well-established colony of soft corals. Maabour is a multilevel dive whose northern side reaches Bubbles Cliff, and at Batroun the wreck of a cement freighter lies near the coast.
Divers trained for depth get the most from the wall and its arches. Guided dives still take divers from SSI Scuba Diver or equivalent upward, and juniors with appropriate supervision, with the site and depth planned to each diver's certification and logged experience, so newly qualified Open Water divers have dives here too. Clarity is a reason to come north: the coast around Batroun is consistently clearer than the water near Beirut, being further from run-off and development.

Dive types & marine life
Lionfish, an invasive species with no natural predators in the Mediterranean, turn up alongside stingrays and moray eels at Maabour, where a sea turtle is possible on a lucky day. At the Pyramids one structure is covered by Dendronephthya, a soft coral that is starting to inhabit Mediterranean waters.

Questions divers ask
What certification do the Amchit and Byblos sites need?+
Guided dives start at SSI Scuba Diver or equivalent, with juniors accepted under appropriate supervision. The Pyramids off Jbeil is an advanced site averaging 38 m, and Barbour's arches at an average 45 m are a technical dive.
Is Amchit dived from shore or by boat?+
Bubbles Cliff is best reached by boat; from the beach it takes a long surface swim. The Amchit Wall itself lies a few hundred metres from shore.
What wetsuit does the water off Byblos need?+
A 3 mm wetsuit is comfortable from June through September and a 5 mm in spring and autumn, while winter calls for a 7 mm or a drysuit. Water at 30 to 40 m is noticeably cooler than at the surface, so a suit chosen for the surface can fall short on a second dive.
