Casino Point Dive Park
Concrete steps into the first underwater park in the US

Casino Point sits at the north-west end of Avalon Harbor, below the Casino building, and the Avalon Underwater Dive Park there was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States. Concrete steps take you straight into a kelp forest, and because the point faces north it stays mostly protected from the heavy surf and waves for most of the year.
Also known as Avalon Underwater Dive Park, Casino Point Underwater Park.

The dive
The entry is the reason people keep coming back. Concrete steps run down at the point beside the Casino building, so divers and snorkellers step down a few steps and walk in rather than negotiating a surf-washed beach. An air refill station and a tank and weight rental counter sit within a few paces of the water, so repeating the dive costs nothing more than a walk back up the steps. The point faces north, which is why it stays mostly protected from the heavy surf and waves for most of the year.
Swim out from the steps and the kelp closes overhead. The park is a protected area and nothing can be removed from it, and the common sightings show it: garibaldi over the rock, kelp bass among the stipes, moray eels in the ledges and lobsters backed into the cracks. Octopus and horn sharks reward a slow pass rather than a fast swim, and bat rays and the occasional giant black sea bass come through over the reef.
There is structure as well as kelp. A shipwreck in the park starts at 60 ft (18 m), and the Su-Jac lies just off Casino Point among other wrecks in the island's waters, so the deeper end of the dive is metal rather than canopy. Everything is reached from the same steps and finished at them, so there is no boat, no crossing and no open-water swim at the end of it.
Background
The Avalon Underwater Dive Park at Casino Point was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States, and the protection that came with that status still shapes the diving. The water off the point is now the Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area, adopted by the California Fish and Game Commission in December 2010 and in effect from 2012. It prohibits the take of all living marine resources apart from maintenance of artificial structures inside the area under permit, and allows the feeding of fish for marine life viewing.

Season follows Catalina Island: Jul–Oct brings the warmest water and best visibility as the kelp thins; winter storms cut visibility and cool it to 13°C.

Questions divers ask
Do you need a boat to dive Casino Point?+
No. The dive park is a shore entry: concrete steps run down into the water beside the Casino building at the north-west end of Avalon Harbor, with an air refill station and tank and weight rental right next to the entry point.
What will I see at Casino Point Dive Park?+
Garibaldi, kelp bass, moray eels, bat rays, octopus, lobsters, horn sharks and giant black sea bass are the common sightings inside the park. It is a protected area and nothing can be removed from it, which is a large part of why they stay.
