Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, is a shore-diving base on the north coast of Timor. East of town, easy shore access leads onto walls that reach 40 to 50 metres, with Black Rock probably the best of them, while Tasi Tolu and Pertamina Pier are muck and critter dives for seahorses, frogfish, octopus and schooling batfish. Seagrass shallows at two sites near town draw dugongs all year.
About diving in Dili
Dili's centres run shore dives to the sites around town, driving divers along the coast road. A guided shore dive starts at about 50 USD; local boat trips run to sites such as the Pinnacle from about 60 USD for one dive or 120 USD for two. One centre also runs a boat to Ataúro, an hour's crossing from Dili, for days on the island's reefs.
East of Dili, the coast gives shore entries onto walls. At Black Rock a horseshoe-shaped wall on the eastern face drops past 50 metres, and other walls reach 40 to 50 metres. Tasi Tolu is a muck dive over a mostly sandy bottom where rhinopias, seahorses, frogfish and harlequin ghost pipefish are not unusual sightings, and Pertamina Pier is a critter dive with octopus and schooling batfish. Seagrass shallows at two sites near town draw dugongs all year.
The area suits macro photographers and divers comfortable organising shore entries on a tidal coast. Currents around Timor-Leste vary from calm to hazardous, so tide predictions matter, and Black Rock is for experienced divers only. Divers after pristine reefs and walls without the city should go to Ataúro Island instead, 27 km off the coast.
