Mactan & Olango

The dive shops are strung along a two-kilometre stretch of Mactan's east coast, through Maribago, Buyong and Kontiki, several of them inside or beside a resort and none of them far from the airport terminal. A few of the sites are walked in off the beach, but most are reached by boat, often only a few minutes of bangka to the next house reef along. What does count as a trip is the crossing to Olango and the channel sanctuaries, around thirty minutes each way, and the deeper Marigondon sites at the end of the strip.

The shore profile repeats along the coast: a shelf of coral and sand from about 3 m out to 5–10 m, then a wall that falls away into deeper water. Nudibranchs, harlequin and mantis shrimp, frogfish, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses are the usual work on the shelf, with turtles, jacks, emperors, barracuda and sardine shoals along the edge. Marigondon Cave breaks the pattern, a chamber roofed at 29 m over a floor at 40 m whose resident flashlightfish carry light organs beneath their eyes. Off Olango the walls are bigger, and grey reef sharks, tuna and barracuda work the blue beside them.

This reads first as a training and macro coast. Roughly twenty of the catalogued sites are resort or dive-shop house reefs within about two kilometres of each other, which is why so many Open Water courses and refresher dives run here, and why the shops keep the deeper Marigondon sites and the Olango crossing for divers who already hold the cards. Currents are the other reason for that split: mild on the training reefs, but strong and unpredictable off Olango's northern tip and heavy with down-currents beside Marigondon Port, where boat traffic is constant.

It suits divers with a day either side of a Cebu flight, photographers working small subjects, and technical divers who came for the cave and the deep walls. It also carries its own cluster of independent dive centres rather than resort concessions alone, so it works as a base rather than a single-resort stop. Divers after reef scale, long visibility or dependable big-animal encounters are better carrying on to Moalboal on Cebu's west coast, Malapascua in the north, or Panglao and the Bohol sites across the water.
