Moucha Island
Shallow coral gardens and deeper drop-offs, 30 to 45 minutes from the city

Moucha lies roughly 15 km off the Djibouti mainland, ringed by the smaller Maskali islands, a scatter of islets and a coral reef, and it carries the everyday diving out of the city. The reef runs from shallow coral gardens into deeper walls and drop-offs, the water is usually calm, and visibility is often between 15 and 30 metres.
Also known as Île Moucha, Musha Island.

The dive
The crossing from the Port of Djibouti takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the boat works whichever side of the island the wind allows. The shallow ground is coral garden, hard and soft coral with angelfish, butterflyfish and parrotfish over it, and the diving there is undemanding: currents are minimal, so most of the effort goes into looking rather than swimming. This is the part of the site beginners are put on.
Away from the gardens the reef steepens into walls and drop-offs, and that is where more experienced groups go. With little current the dive is a slow traverse rather than a drift, and visibility of 15 to 30 metres makes it good ground for photography. Turtles and rays are seen over the reef, dolphins occasionally, and the same reef system continues around the neighbouring Maskali islands and the islets between them.
Background
Moucha and the neighbouring Maskali islands sit on Djibouti's UNESCO World Heritage tentative list as Les îles Moucha et Maskali. In 2014 a presidential decree made them a marine protected area of 36.6 square kilometres, part of a network created that year to cover coral reef, mangrove, sea turtle nesting beaches and the pelagic species that use them, whale sharks and dolphins among them.

Season follows Djibouti: Whale sharks aggregate reliably November–February when plankton blooms in the gulf; sightings are sparse the rest of the year.

Questions divers ask
How do you get to Moucha Island?+
It is a 30 to 45 minute boat ride from the Port of Djibouti, roughly 15 km off the mainland, and day boats out of the city run the trip.
Is Moucha Island good for beginners?+
Yes. The shallow coral gardens are calm, with minimal current and visibility often between 15 and 30 metres, which makes them straightforward first dives; the deeper walls and drop-offs on the same reef are left to more experienced divers.
