Eleuthera — Cape Eleuthera & Rock Sound
Deep wall drifts and a shark-feeding site off Cape Eleuthera
The southern and south-western coast of Eleuthera holds over 20 dive sites along a reef wall that runs almost parallel to the shore and drops to 600 m (2,000 ft). Typical dives are deep drifts along that wall, mixed with the swim-through caves of Cave Rock, the coral bommies of Monolith, a tidal blow hole at Jake's Hole and the shark-feeding site of Split Coral Head. Boat dives run from Cape Eleuthera Resort & Marina and Davis Harbour Marina.
About diving in Eleuthera — Cape Eleuthera & Rock Sound
Diving here is by day boat. The Dive Shop is based at Cape Eleuthera Resort & Marina, and most of its sites are minutes away; it also runs night dives and the Eleuthera shark dive. Miller's Dive Shop has run one- and two-tank trips from Davis Harbour Marina: divers arrive at 8:00 am, and the first dive is the deeper of the two, on a deep reef, the wall or a drug plane wreck. Dives run from 9 to 37 m (30-120 ft), and wind can cancel a day.
The reef wall runs almost parallel to the coastline and drops off to 600 m (2,000 ft), which makes for drifts along its face. Cave Rock has several caves at 15 m (50 ft) large enough to swim inside, and hammerhead sharks frequent the area, along with stingrays, morays and nurse sharks. At Monolith, coral bommies rise out of a sandy seabed 30 m (100 ft) deep at the edge of the wall, home to a colony of garden eels. Caribbean reef sharks gather at Split Coral Head, and loggerhead turtles visit the floating Cobia Cage. Visibility runs 25 to 30 m (80-100 ft), even in the rainy season.
Cut Through City is for advanced divers: a deeper swim-through leads along a dark passageway to a blue-water exit at 27 m (90 ft), with the option of dropping to 40 m (130 ft) to an anchor embedded in the wall. Jake's Hole demands care, because a diver can be trapped in its tidal hole. Newer divers can certify with the Dive Shop, which caters to every level, and DAN insurance is required to dive with it. Divers after shallow wrecks should look instead to Eleuthera — Harbour Island & Spanish Wells at the north end of the island.
