Calamareo
A vertical drop from a 12 m platform to 22 m off Lobos

Calamareo is a wall dive off Lobos, on a face cut with overhangs hung with red gorgonians and threaded with small caves, cracks, passages and tunnels. The volcanic platform on top is at about 12 metres and the reef falls vertically to 22, shallow enough that the whole wall stays inside Open Water depths. Stingrays and eagle rays cross the sand outside.

The dive
The boat anchors at about 12 metres on top of a volcanic platform and the dive starts there. Towards the northeast the reef falls vertically to 22 metres, and the wall can be run in either direction, so which way the group goes is settled on the day rather than fixed by the site. The drop is short enough that the whole face stays in Open Water range.
It is not a flat wall. The rock is broken by overhangs hung with red gorgonians, and by small caves, cracks, passages and tunnels that you go through rather than past, which is what makes this a slow dive despite the modest depth range. Slipper lobsters and moray eels of several species sit back in the holes, and conger eels and hermit crabs take finding.
Out from the rock, stingrays and eagle rays cross the open ground and large schools of fish hang off the face. With 22 metres as the bottom, the dive usually ends on gas rather than on no-decompression time. The ascent is simple: back up the wall to the 12 metre platform, then the stop held over the top of it.
