Gangneung

South Korea's largest cluster of wrecks, led by the scuttled trawler Stella

Gangneung, on the Gangwon Province coast of the East Sea, holds more wrecks than anywhere else in South Korea. Day boats run out to the Gangneung Underwater Park, where the Stella, a former Russian fishing vessel, was sunk as an artificial reef in May 2020. The Tank, a second hull and an artificial-reef point grown with coral fill out a programme of cold, low-visibility dives from 6 m on the Stella's upper works to 24 m on the reef point, with the hull's base the deep option.

About diving in Gangneung

Diving here is a day-boat routine from Sacheon Port: gear up, ride out, dive, return to port for the surface interval, then repeat for the next dive. Some centres keep two dedicated dive boats and run trips daily, though on weekdays a boat needs at least four divers before it goes out. Descents and ascents follow a line, because the first 6 m can hold 2 to 3 m of visibility before the water clears to about 10 m at depth. Newly trained divers make their first sea dives at Agajjam, near Sacheon Port.

The underwater park is the core of the diving, and its draw is steel rather than coral. The East Sea floor here is mostly sand, so life gathers on rock and placed structures: scuttled fishing hulls lying close together, military vehicles set out in a square formation, and scaffold towers built as artificial reefs. Schools of fish hang around the Stella, most of the wreck is covered in mussels, and the towers hold nudibranchs. Rock shaped by lava flows forms the Jurassic World point. Cold currents and plankton blooms set the tone of the water.

The coast suits divers who want wrecks and are at ease in cold water with a dim surface layer and modest visibility below it. The Haejung Gongwon point lies close to Sacheon Port with a descent line, which makes it a training site, and the Stella's upper works keep less experienced divers within a shallower plan, while the wreck's base gives deep divers a target. Anyone looking for warm water or reliable clarity will find it hard going, especially when the monsoon has wrecked visibility for weeks.

In January and February the water hovers at 2 to 4 °C, and winter is when visibility is at its best. The centres open every day of the year, so spring and early summer are regular diving months between the two windows. July to October is the best stretch on the East Sea, though even in August the water rarely passes 21 °C. Plankton blooms are part of the year, and the monsoon can wreck visibility for weeks.

Best months: July, August, September, October

How to get to Gangneung

KTX trains reach Gangneung in about two hours from Seoul Station and an hour and a half from Cheongnyangni. The city's own airport stopped passenger service in 2002, when Yangyang International Airport took over its flights. Dive centres at Sacheon Port run their own boats out to the underwater park.

Questions divers ask

How do divers get to Gangneung from Seoul?+

The KTX train takes about two hours from Seoul Station and an hour and a half from Cheongnyangni. Gangneung's airport no longer carries passengers; Yangyang International Airport serves the coast.

When is the best time to dive Gangneung?+

July to October is the best window, though August water rarely passes 21 °C. Winter brings the clearest water, at the cost of 2 to 4 °C in January and February.

Can the Stella wreck be dived without going deep?+

Yes. Its superstructure begins around 6 m down, so a shallow plan can stay on the upper works. The hull bottoms out near 39 m, which is a deep dive.

What is the visibility like at Gangneung?+

It is generally under 10 m and worst in the top 6 m, so most dives descend and ascend on a line. The monsoon can wreck visibility for weeks, while winter brings the clearest water.
