Nanki-Shirahama & Tanabe

A wreck covered in schooling fish, five minutes from the harbour

Shirahama, in Wakayama on the south-west of the Kii Peninsula, dives the boat points of Kanayama Bay, five to ten minutes from port, and calm beaches on Tanabe Bay. The Kuroshio keeps the water mild enough for tropical fish to overwinter among temperate species. The Sensen wreck, smothered in sweepers and cardinalfish, is the signature dive, backed by arches at Irozu and Payman Cape, goby sand at Sengokuoka and a deep drop-off at Ebise. Short boat rides and sheltered beaches keep it diveable in any month.

About diving in Nanki-Shirahama & Tanabe

Shirahama has about 15 dive points. The main boat points sit in Kanayama Bay, the nearest five minutes from the harbour and most within ten, so seasickness rarely becomes a problem, and because the points sit so close in, small waves seldom close them. Beach entries add calm shallow dives: one starts straight from the sand in front of a dive centre, and the beach facing Engetsu Island, beside the aquarium, is the fallback in typhoons and winter storms.

The seabed is rock and white sand, cut into ridges, arches and channels. West of the wreck, Kita no ne is a large ridge running north to south with arches along it, and the shop-front beach opens through a channel onto white sand between bowl-shaped rocks. The Kuroshio mixes tropical and temperate life: clownfish, neon damselfish and stripeys sit on the rocks off that beach while silver-stripe round herring school above them.

New divers have the widest choice: the three beaches, Irozu and Kita no ne are all rated for beginners, and Sandan and Double Arch are intermediate dives. Ebise is rated advanced, and Kasumi no ne, 15 minutes out by boat, drops to 38 m. Some Shirahama shops also dive the points at Kushimoto, the southernmost town in Wakayama, for divers who want a more tropical scene, since water and life grow more tropical further south.

Boats and beaches work through the whole year. February brings the coldest water, about 17 °C on average, and days below 15 °C are rare, so tropical fish stay through the winter. The northwest wind can blow hard in winter, but the beach in front of Engetsu Island stays calm even in strong cold snaps. The water warms through spring to its peak of about 28 °C in August. Summer is the high season; the south wind is often strong then, but Kanayama Bay and Tanabe Bay open away from it, so most days are calm.

Best months: July, August

Dive types & marine life

Dense schools of sweepers and cardinalfish cover the Sensen wreck. Frogfish and nudibranchs are frequent finds, and tropical fish survive the winter here, so colourful species stay even when fish numbers drop. Kasumi no ne holds fields of a sea anemone that, in Japan, is seen only around Shirahama and Tanabe.
