Punta Jaime
A vertical wall stepping down to 38 m off Portinatx

The point that closes the western side of Portinatx bay — properly Punta Mares, though divers book it as Punta Jaime. Its vertical walls fall to 38 metres, stepping down in successive rock barriers that hold the fish. Golden grouper, dusky grouper and spotted codling are the residents; greater amberjack and albacore come through off the face.

The dive
Punta Jaime is the headland closing the western part of Portinatx bay, on Ibiza's north coast. The dive is the wall itself, which is vertical and falls to 38 metres. It does not drop as one clean sheet: successive rock barriers step down it, and each of them hosts species, so the descent is a series of ledges to work rather than a single face to follow.
Depth sets the shape of the dive. The bottom of the wall at 38 metres is a short visit, and most of the time goes on working back up the barriers. Golden grouper, dusky grouper and spotted codling are the fish that stay in the rock; greater amberjack and albacore pass along the outside of the wall, so it is worth turning away from the face now and then to look into the blue.
