Manchones Reef

The most-visited reef in Cancún, and the reason MUSA exists

Area photo: Andy Blackledge from Scottsdale, AZ, USA · CC BY 2.0

The largest coral reef in Cancún and the most heavily dived, beginning just off the island's shore and run as the standard first tank of a two-tank morning out of Isla Mujeres. Ten metres at its deepest, with large coral formations, schools of fish and turtles moving through, and the sculpture gallery of MUSA on the sand alongside.

Also known as Manchones Grande, Los Manchones.

The dive

Boats leave the harbour early - the standard two-tank morning meets at 8:10 and departs at 8:30 - and Manchones Grande is normally the first tank. The reef begins just off the island's shore and bottoms out at about ten metres, so the dive is a slow swim along the reef line: elk horn, stag horn and brain coral, blue tangs, grunts, snappers and parrotfish over them, stingrays and lobsters below, and turtles moving through, which is what people come up talking about.

The sculpture gallery of MUSA stands on the sand alongside, and it was put there precisely to take the pressure off this reef: Manchones is the largest coral reef in Cancún and the most often visited by divers and snorkellers, and so was receiving the most damage. That history is worth carrying into the water - visibility here averages around twenty metres over white sand, this is still the busiest ground in the area, and buoyancy control counts for more than distance covered.
