Manta Reef

Mantas over a coral-covered reef top at 15 metres

Manta Reef is a submerged reef outside the Great Astrolabe barrier, roughly 40 minutes by boat from the Kadavu lodges. The top of it sits at around 15 metres under healthy hard and soft coral, and that shallow plateau is where the diving is done. Mantas work the site, and they are seen at Kadavu throughout the year rather than in one season.

The dive

This is a submerged reef sitting outside the Great Astrolabe barrier rather than inside the lagoon, so getting to it is a commitment: approximately 40 minutes by boat from the resort. The top of the structure is at around 15 metres and is covered in healthy hard and soft corals, which gives you a shallow plateau to settle on and enough bottom time to wait rather than search.

Mantas are the reason to make the crossing, and waiting is the way to see them: pick a spot on the reef top, stay low and let them come over you rather than swimming at them. Schooling fusiliers, surgeonfish and Indian mackerel move across the same ground and are usually the first thing you notice. Mantas can be seen at Kadavu throughout the year, so this is not a dive with one narrow season.
