Sweet Lips
Two pieces of reef split by a sand bank, 17 m deep

Sweet Lips is two pieces of reef separated by a sand bank off Flic en Flac, with a depth of 17 metres and a profile described as relatively easy. That combination is why it is used for beginners and for macro photographers: the shallow ceiling leaves time to work slowly along the edges where coral meets sand.

The dive
At 17 metres the whole of the site sits inside an easy recreational profile, so there is no depth management to run and the dive is limited by gas. How the two reef sections are worked is the guide's call; nothing is published about the distance between them, the order they are dived in or what marks the edge of either, so the briefing decides the route rather than the site.
The shallow ceiling means long dives, which is what makes it useful for macro work: you can spend the time on the boundary where reef meets sand instead of covering ground. It is also the profile picked for divers straight out of a course, since nothing about it demands depth management. No resident species are listed for the site, so treat what turns up as the day's luck.

Season follows Mauritius: Cyclone season (Jan-Mar) can disrupt trips and cloud visibility; the trade-wind months of Apr-Nov give steadier, clearer conditions.
