A steep face of sea fans and sponges, jacks schooling on top
Area photo: Bernard DUPONT · CC BY-SA 4.0
A steep wall covered in huge sea fans and sponges, dropping to about 40 m, with a flat shallow area on top where jack fish school over soft coral. Reef fish are spread the whole length of the face, and pelagic fish, great barracuda among them, come past where the wall meets open water.

The dive
Drop in over the shallows, cross the lip and turn along the wall. The face is steep and thickly covered in huge sea fans and sponges, and each one is worth a slow look: snapper hold in the recesses, lionfish sit out on the coral, anemonefish and banner fish work the smaller heads, and pygmy seahorses live on the bigger fans if your guide knows which ones to check.
Depth is yours to choose. The wall carries on to about 40 m and the same structure repeats up and down it, so there is no need to go deep unless you want the largest fans. Off the face, keep looking out into the blue: whitetip reef sharks patrol the edge, and pelagic fish and great barracuda come past on their own schedule rather than on your dive plan.
Finish on the flat shallow ground on top of the wall. Various soft corals grow up there and schooling jack fish are the usual sight, circling in the shallows while you run the safety stop, with the reef fish of the wall thinning out into open coral. Snapper and banner fish stay down with the structure, so the last few minutes are the shallow, bright end of the site rather than a repeat of the face.

Know before you go
- Menjangan records Bali's highest rate of decompression sickness on dives like this one: hold your planned depth on the wall, ascend slowly and treat the safety stop as mandatory.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Pos 2?+
The wall drops to about 40 m, but the dive is depth-of-your-choosing: sea fans, sponges and reef fish are spread up and down the face, and most dives finish on the flat shallow ground on top of it.
What will I see at Pos 2?+
Huge sea fans and sponges on the wall, with snapper, anemonefish, banner fish and lionfish among them and pygmy seahorses on the larger fans. Schools of jack fish gather in the shallows on top, and whitetip reef sharks, pelagic fish and great barracuda pass along the face.
Do I need an advanced certification for Pos 2?+
No. The shallow ground and the upper wall sit within Open Water limits and the current is usually mild. Only divers who want to work the lower part of the face, which runs to about 40 m, need deep training.
